Surrey is big: Guildford, Newton, Fleetwood, Cloverdale and South Surrey each feel like their own town, and a move here can mean anything from a high-rise near King George Station to a family home on a quiet cul-de-sac. This checklist keeps the work in order so moving day is the easy part.
4 to 6 weeks before
- Book your movers. The end and start of each month fill up first. Ask for a quote early and pick a date as soon as you have your keys or closing date.
- Check strata rules at both ends. Many Surrey condos and townhouse complexes need notice, an elevator booking, a set moving window or a deposit. Some ask the moving company for a certificate of insurance: tell us and we send it.
- Start sorting. Sell, donate or give away what you will not use. Every item you do not move saves time on the day.
2 to 3 weeks before
- Start packing the rooms you use least: spare rooms, storage, books, seasonal clothes. Label every box with the room it goes to.
- Change your address with Canada Post, your bank, ICBC and the City of Surrey for utilities.
- Plan parking. Measure where the truck can stop at both homes. In busy areas such as City Centre, ask the building manager where movers should park.
The week before
- Finish packing everything except what you need for the last few days.
- Empty, defrost and clean the fridge and freezer at least a day before.
- Take apart anything you want to do yourself, or tell us what needs taking apart.
- Pack a box of essentials: chargers, medication, documents, a change of clothes, toilet paper and the kettle.
Moving day
- Keep a path clear from the door to the truck, and keep kids and pets in a quiet room.
- Walk through each room with the crew lead at the start, and do a last check of cupboards and closets at the end.
- Traffic on Highway 1, King George Boulevard and the bridges is heaviest at rush hour. An early start usually means a shorter day.
